March Forward, Future Bookkeepers!

This month’s value is Competence, which is about more than basic skills training for the people we serve. Through a comprehensive training program, DISCOVERBOOKKEEPING provides individuals with the highest level of bookkeeping and job-readiness preparation that we can. Our goal is to make each of them competitive in today’s workforce and ready to start a new career in financial administration.

February: Sustainability

Greetings Friends!

Following January’s letter on equality, TBKC has spent this past February focusing on another important value: Sustainability. The concept of sustainability helps us to carry out our mission and support a vibrant and productive New York City workforce. From career solutions for DISCOVERBOOKKEEPING (DB) participants to the pursuit of excellence in nonprofit management, we have come to understand that sustainability is at the core of who we are.

The definition of sustainability is the capacity to endure and the potential for long-term well-being. For us, sustainability is the framework from which we operate. As a nonprofit organization, we have worked diligently to ensure that our staff and volunteers are ready to assist those in need of our services. We cultivate staff leadership, practice intelligent management, and remain strategic and passionate in the pursuit of our mission.

For our participants, a new or better career represents the potential for long-term well-being. A career is more than a job. A career shapes one’s life and provides structure. Rather than a quick fix solution, our participants are committed to the lasting security that a career provides. As such, we strive to provide our participants with the tools necessary to achieve career sustainability.

Graduates of DB have the mobility to utilize their skills in a wide variety of work environments. They have the flexibility to shift within a company from basic office administration to financial administration. They also have the tools to become small business owners. Ultimately, they are equipped to become vital members of NYC’s workforce.

Furthermore, the workforce development community is aware of DB’s uniqueness. I am proud to announce that TBKC has won the 2011 Opportunity Award for Promoting Middle Skill Jobs presented by the New York Employment & Training Coalition (NYCETC)!

Given to an organization whose program represents a model of training and placement in workforce development, TBKC joins the ranks of other leaders in the field, including Year Up NYC, The Doe Fund and Upwardly Global. 2011 marks our 5th year anniversary and this peer recognition is momentous for TBKC. For those committed to the journey, our training program is the opportunity for a new, sustainable future.
